Get-up-and-go policy draws guys to church
|
Rev. Peter Baker
|
Few people would expect a 100-year-old church in Wales to be pioneering an exciting new strategy for reaching men. But that's exactly what I found at Highfields Church in Cardiff, during my visit to the UK in January. This unusual congregation is growing, thanks in part to a "get-up-and-go policy" instituted by its senior minister, Peter Baker.
Once a month, Highfields breaks with the traditional "hymn sandwich" approach to worship. Rev. Baker divides the service into segments, and gives people the option to stay or go as each segment comes to a

close. Worshippers can stay for as little as 45 minutes, or as long as 90 minutes. Allowing people the freedom to dash out has helped Highfields attract a bumper crop men and young adults.
